Methodological naturalism and epistemic internalism

چکیده
Epistemic naturalism holds that the results or methodologies from the cognitive sciences are relevant to epistemology, and some have maintained that scientific methods are more compatible with externalist theories of justification than with internalist theories. But practically all discussions about naturalized epistemology are framed exclusively in terms of cognitive psychology, which is only one of the cognitive sciences. The question addressed in this essay is whether a commitment to naturalism really does favor externalism over internalism, and we offer reasons for thinking that naturalism in epistemology is compatible with both internalist and externalist conceptions of justification. We also argue that there are some distinctively internalist aim that are currently being studied scientifically and these notions, and others, should be studied by scientific methods.

Why the Presence of Catalysts in Chemical Kinetics Calls for a Reconsideration of Natural Kinds as Dynamic Process-Oriented Epistemic Tools
The current mantra regarding scientific naturalism about natural kinds has centered on the methodological and axiological successes of acquiring knowledge using the resources found in the natural sciences. The methodological components of scientific naturalism are primarily concerned with how to conduct inquiry, along with how certain rules function within systems of knowledge. Note, however, t...
متن کاملBiological Rationalism
I argue that contemporary philosophy of language in the analytic tradition rests on two fundamentally wrong assumptions: empiricism and externalism. After I show why these two assumptions are incorrect, I turn my attention to biological rationalism. Biological rationalism—a research program inspired by the work of Noam Chomsky—is committed to nativism and internalism. I believe biological ratio...
متن کاملNatural Kinds and Concepts: A Pragmatist and Methodologically Naturalistic Account
In this chapter I lay out a notion of philosophical naturalism that aligns with pragmatism. It is developed and illustrated by a presentation of my views on natural kinds and my theory of concepts. Both accounts reflect a methodological naturalism and are defended not based on metaphysical considerations, but in terms of their philosophical fruitfulness. A core theme is that the epistemic inter...
متن کاملDoxastic planning and epistemic internalism
In the following I discuss the debate between epistemological internalists and externalists from an unfamiliar meta-epistemological perspective. In doing so, I focus on the question of whether rationality is best captured in externalist or internalist terms. Using the idea of epistemic judgments as “doxastic plans”, I characterize one important subspecies of judgments about epistemic rationalit...
متن کاملIs Naturalism Normative? The Function of Epistemic Norms Within Naturalized Epistemology
The topic of the paper is the problem of normativity within naturalized epistemology. The question I pose is whether naturalism can be conducted as a normative enterprise or whether it is merely descriptive as traditional epistemologists maintain. If they are to be faithful to their philosophical presuppositions naturalists cannot deliver traditionally understood substantive account of normativ...
